The Barnyard

I tole the brothers in the lodge last night I was gonna ride Tsarvich (14 1/2 - 15 hands green broke Mammoth Jack jack) today… couple of them said what about the calf (calf kicked me while I was unloading her the 30th of November, and had to have Arthroscopic surgery to repair the damage she did, and the damage I did to it about 6 weeks before when I was cutting wood, and twisted and fell at the same time)… tole em it don’t matter! Wanna buy tickets?

Got him in the corral, and shoed everybody else out, and closed the gate. Got the halter on him first time, without any problems.

Went and got the horse blanket, and got it on him no problem… (wow, I’m batting 100!)… went back to the man cave and got the saddle.

Saddle stirrups are too short (I can change them)! And the belt to tie the cinch in is way too long (with any holes…) Fixed that. Got the saddle on him (but the cinch isn’t tight enough…cut another hole for the buckle to fit in)… all the time, he’s patiently waiting for me to do the next step. Realized I had the saddle and blanket too high on his back, so moved them down a little… and while the cinch still isn’t tight enough, it doesn’t turn much.

After 7 or 3 tries (and mostly realizing the cinch wasn’t tight enough)… got it almost tight enough and got Tsarvich over close to the fence so I could get up on him easier. Found out why (I know Ed and Jim you know the other reason why cowboys wear cowboy boots) cowboys where sharp toed boots. Couldn’t get my right foot in the stirrup! Got back off, and tried 4 or 2 more times… and said, I’ll just hold tight with my right (“bad”) knee, and got on again.

Guy I bought Tsarvich from said when he rode him (Tsarvich is green broke) he used a halter with 2 lead ropes… figured that would work for me (and he does turn when I pull a lead rope!)… but don’t have a good stop yet! He took me around the corral (another miracle… and old fart having a double 1st time! ((first time I’ve ever rode a Jack, and first time I’ve ever rode my own!... and to be perfectly honest first time I’ve put a saddle on anything in 45 years!)… after the first time around the corral, I think Tsarvich thought he had enough of the old fat white guy on his back… so went under the roof next to the barn. Blin was I glad I only had 1 foot in a stirrup! Grabbed the roof as I came to it, and exited the saddle. He turned to there so quick I didn’t think to try and turn him.

The roof sloops down to about 8 feet off the ground. Given Tsarvich is 14 ½ - 15 hands high (58 – 60 inches) the roof was well below my arms. Grabbed the roof and dropped to the ground (controlled drop!)… took the saddle and blanket off, and let Tsarvich loose for today… I feel good day! I need to have someone (have 2 friends who can) help me get the saddle cinched down properly… need to adjust the stirrups to the right length, there is a place for another cinch in the back of the saddle (need to buy one)… but, I rode him! He never bucked, and put up with this OF playing with the saddle for 30 to 45 minutes.

If I would have sold tickets, everybody would have wanted their money back! No Show!
