The Barnyard

Here it is the 14th of January (and I’ve finally marked in a number 3 pencil my seed catalogs)… And it’s supposed to be 10 in the morning… and 5 Friday morning (sure sounds like dead of winter to this poor dumb Mountain William)… but this morning as I walked to the post box, I saw the first dandelion bloom of the season! Actually starting last Thursday or Friday, our egg collection has doubled… and today, when I went to gather eggs I had 10 in the “feeder” portion of the horse trailer still warm (yes all 10!) Which means I have a broody hen1

Went to the doc’s today (I was surprised same day of the week as I had my surgery)… and had a PA (what ever that means). Tole me to wait at least another week before I tried and ride Tsarvich (our new Mammoth Jack Jack that was sold to me as "green broke" after I started having problems with my knee ((why the surgery))). Tole me the worst thing I could do was climb a ladder… and I gently explained I was the only person I knew in Marion County who harvested citrus that never have been inside. I then explained I needed to climb the ladder that was over the 3 ½ whiskey barrels and put plastic over it (to protect them to above 15 degrees). Then he said, you’ve been doing what you need to do… while it’s not the best thing to do… you got to do what you have to do! Blin (I suspect nurse) a medical person after my heart… (actually tole me, that the exercises were meant for “older” “city” people, and that I really didn’t need them as I was doing what had to be done here) (He did look with surprise when I tole him I unloaded and stacked 800 pounds of feed last night!

Gonna be cold next 2 days so… gonna hunker down in the Man Cave (with the stove burning… hot coffee, good book and fantastic music in my ears…) and “only” do morning and evening chores. Blin life it outstanding!

Husband checked the 8 colonies of bees last weekend....before we got the 2" of ice and 3" more of snow,arrgh...and they are all with brood or have young bees. Must have heard the maple trees have buds. we keep daily record of temps, what's blooming and it shows that they were bringing in maple pollen in mid-Feb.

Also notice many more skunks out and about; breeding season for them. I love crusing the farm seeing what is happening each day. The state forester was out the beginning of the month and so informative on what trees we had,how old they might be...now I know the difference between 5 kinds of oaks! All of them that make me sneeze all spring and fall! DEE
