The Barnyard

It's a bit late, but then again we tend to do most things a bit late around here. Thing is, the finances were finally there that I could order a bit. It's going to mean another week light on the groceries from the store, but that's ok. That forces me to be creative in the cooking.

Most everything I ordered this year was restocking seed that the FIL used up last year. The onions, for example. He planted heavy, and yet we got very few (and only "pearl-onion" size at that). Which left me without any seed to try here at home myself this year. So, I ordered more. (Besides, the FIL prefers the seed they sell at the local grocery store. *shaking head*)

I got more:

- Sunset Runner Beans (planted a row of 25 last year, had a couple of flowers, no beans)
- Bull's Blood Beets (did well last year)
- Bushy Cucumbers (these and the Parades I also bought last year produced like gangbusters)
- Yellow of Parma onions (the Australian Brown onions I bought last year wouldn't be in till April, much too late to plant and get production on)
- Early Scarlet Globe Radish (another that produced well last year)
- Bloomsdale Spinach (used American Spinach last year, produced reasonably well, but we're only going for a small eating crop this year and I needed some OP seed)
- Anna Swartz Squash (didn't pruduce at all last year, and the FIL used all the seed)
- Black from Tula Tomato (almost produced to ripe last year, but not quite. And the FIL used all the seed.)
- Applegreen Eggplant (FIL used all the seed, and almost got some fruit off the 2 plants last year, this is purely for fun sake, to see if I can do it)
- Collective Farm Woman Melon (have about 5 seeds left from last year, was productive enough I want to see if we get actual fruit this year)
- Cream of Saskatchewan Watermelon (had 3 seeds left, almost got a couple of melon before they split on the vine)
- Black Hungarian Pepper (another that hardly produced last year and was over-seeded by the FIL)
- Empress Green beans (produced reasonably well last year, but out of seed)

I also ordered some herb seed this year, just four packs. I decided to try Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, and Sage. These are herbs I use pretty frequently in cooking, thought I should give it a go, growing some in pots this summer. Between these 4, and the two variety of chili peppers I hope to grow this year (Black Hungarian a moderately heated variety, and the Chervenka Chushka red Hungarian pepper that produced seed for me last year) I think I could be in decently fine form for seasoning our meals. Oh, and I already have a pkg of parsley seed, and a wild chive plant that I harvest multiple times throughout the summer, each year.

So, these are my plans. Won't probably get to try all my different seeds here at my house this year, but if I try some and they produce well, I can save the seed (hopefully) and try a different variety the following year. We're not at the point yet where we need the stuff for food in a major way, so I'm still working out the kinks, seeing what I like to grow.

And in the mean time, I'm working on getting the hubby to agree to a veggie garden in the front yard. ALMOST have him there. And he's already in agreement about at least one more planter bed (similar to the one posted in my pics) in the back yard. And another potato barrel since those worked well last year.
