We preserve most of our vegetables (shooting for all this year) by canning, freezing, dehydrating, etc. I make all our jellies and pickles. Both are way easy to do. I was a little intimidated by the pressure canner (for veggies) before I started usi…

How to make compost. That's a big question. It seems like there are 2 theories - #1: The science method where you carefully layer appropriate amounts of brown and green matter in a pile roughly 1 cubic yard in size, then turn the whole thing over a…

Sorry - I haven't checked the forum in a while. We planted straight into it within a couple of weeks of setting up the beds. The only digging we've done in them was this spring we tilled in a cover crop that had overwintered in a section of one of t…

I bought seed trays but without the cell packs or peat pellets. I should state first that I start a LOT of plants from seed (several hundred each year). I take the tray and put about 1.5 inches of soil in the bottom (3 parts garden soil, 1 part peat…

We have done this in Kansas. We use raised beds with wooden sides. We put up the sides around the section of lawn we were converting, then layered in alternate layers of topsoil/compost and raw green material (hay or grass clippings in our case). We…

I noticed that you don't mention straining the pumkin before using it. The first pumkin pie we made with our own pumkin wouldn't set up no matter how long we cooked it. We started baking the pumkin first (usually the ones that were starting to go ba…

About Me:
I have converted my entire city lot (0.25 acre) into garden (except for the little corner where the kids have their swingset). We grew over 1400 lbs of food last year and we're shooting for 2000 this year. I am helping start a community garden not far from where I live. We are also considering getting a pair of nigerian dwarf goats for milk (haven't quite sold the husband on that though).
