The Barnyard

Has anyone decided what they will grow this year? Are you trying anything new?

I assumed they would eat them since they've eaten everything else I've throwin into their pen. Guess we'll see. If they don't I'll use it to feed the compost then I guess.

We are trying potatoes this year. I bought seed potatoes for varieties that we can't get from the store, or can get only in limited time spans -- cranberry reds, true blue (they stay blue all the way through even after cooking, great for potato salad), and Russian banana fingerlings.

Matt, my chickens love sprouts -- and it's a very cheap way to give them high protein high quality additions to their diet in winter.

I like that idea of two gardens. Maybe that's what I've been working toward :-)

I can't believe I'm still trying to decide exactly what I want to do in the garden this year given that I was thinking about this way back in December!

One thing that has worked for me is to put more than one kind of seed in the same row. When I say row, it's kind of a relative term. I use 2 raised beds and I tend to put the seeds in right next to the rows of irrigation. I'm not sure why though because my irrigation system has been leaking for over a year and I just tend to use a watering can!

Anyway, putting more than one variety of seed in together has allowed me to totally fill the space. For example I'd put more than one kind of lettuce seed in together. Some seem to do better than others and I want to avoid wasted space so this works well for me. I keep trying with spinach and keep failing, but I guess I'll try again until the seeds are used up. Spinach doesn't get its own space any more from me though!

I'm going out today to dig in the little bit of clover green compost which survived the winter so that I can plant in a day or 2.
